The 90’s hit sitcom, Seinfeld, popularized a term that is used often especially around the holidays — Regifting. Regifting is the ‘art’ of giving a gift that you received personally to someone else. We regift things that we either don’t need or want or just plain old don’t like. seinfeld regiftThose ugly sweaters, socks, candles and bath soaps are guaranteed ‘regiftable’ items. We regift presents that we use in our annual family White Elephant gift exchange and it’s become quite funny seeing the same gifts reappear each year. There are even etiquette rules fashioned around regifting so you don’t get ‘caught’. Some of these include that you disguise the gift in new gift wrapping and most importantly, don’t ever give the gift to the original gift giver or to someone who knows him or her personally. That would be awkward!

There is however one gift that you have received that you must regift, especially during Christmas. That’s the gift we call the good news, the gospel of Jesus Christ. The message of salvation, that we can have life eternal, the forgiveness of sins and that we can experience the treasures of the Kingdom to come — well that’s a gift that’s just too good to keep to yourself. It’s a gift you can keep for yourself and share with everyone else!

The great thing about regfiting the gospel is that you don’t have to worry about all of the silly rules of regifting. You don’t have to repackage it — it’s perfect just as it came to you. And you’ll never have to worry about who you share it with — everyone needs it.

It’s the greatest gift ever given by our loving Father. That’s why Christmas brings the greatest hope to our broken world. God loves us too much to leave this as it is, He sent His Son Jesus, the Gift of gifts, to redeem and restore all things. He came in the most unassuming of packages, wrapped in a baby blanket and diapers. Yet, this is the greatest gift the world has ever seen.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

That’s a gift you can regift over and over again! Who are you going to give that gift to today?
